About

My name is Jonathan Halliday. I was born in 1972 in the North East of England, where I have lived all my life. I’ve been interested in computing ever since I got my first Atari 65XE back in 1987. In the 1990s, I wrote many programs for the Atari XL/XE range of computers, mostly in C and assembly language. Although I sent some of the software to magazines in the hope they would be published, most of my programs were primarily for personal use and were put in storage when I packed my Atari equipment away in 2001. It wasn’t until 2008 that a nostalgic discussion with a friend about 6502 programming inspired me to dust off the Atari, install an emulator on the PC, and share some of my almost forgotten programs on the Internet.

After resurrecting my old software and finding it well received by the Atari 8-bit community, I rediscovered my interest in 6502 programming. I redesigned and published my word processor ‘The Last Word‘ to wide acclaim, before becoming involved in the development of mass storage drivers, partitioning software, and flash tool development for several new devices. I simultaneously developed an interest in hardware upgrades and repairs, and in the wake of well-documented work undertaken on my own vintage machines, I have been commissioned to perform upgrade installation, modifications and repairs on Atari computers belonging to enthusiasts from the UK, Europe and the United States.

On the software development side, my long-running project to create a preemptively multi-tasking graphical operating system (GOS) on the 8-bit Atari has passed significant milestones, and in 2015/2016 I developed completely new firmware for the Ultimate 1MB and Incognito upgrades. In 2016 I collaborated with Robin Edwards on the ‘Ultimate Cart‘ and ‘UNO Cart‘ projects, and in 2018 I published custom U1MB firmware for the 1088XEL Mini-ATX Atari motherboard.
